This was a challenge. I had not long completed my training and this graced the bench… An original 1959 Hofner Club 60.
It came to the bench in an incredible state! Covered in dust, the wrong pickup, the neck pickup off the guitar, the switches hanging on by a thread and all the metal hardware was rusty and dirty.
So, where do you begin on something like this. Well, I stripped everything back and cleaned it up! Took the dust off, cleaned up the fretboard, re-hydrated the wood and went to work on the frets with the 1500 -12,000 grit sand paper.
Once clean, I removed the bridge pickup and and the electrics. Used the 1st and 6th strings as a guide to place and mount the new pickup surrounds. I placed the two pickup surrounds and held them down with some tape. Once they were in place I pulled out the drill and got them set. Next was getting the two pickups on the guitar and feeding the wires through to the control plate. Wiring up the new pickups to the new control plate and then testing the guitar to make sure everything works as expected.
Finally, chuck on a set of strings (Ernie Ball 9-42) and get it set up!
