I’ve done a number of guitars for Matt over the last year. This is his Morgan custom and he wanted a new pickup and a set up. All in all this one was a fun one!
The work needed… Replace the jack socket, replace the pot, fixing the pickup route (matt had started to route out the shape) and then tweak the scratch plate route.
So, the first thing I did was dismantle the guitar and give it a final check over. The next step, was mark out the pickup route and re-route the cavity. The goal was to square it off and ensure the new pickup fits.
I took some time to assess the next step and changed scenery to clean and oil the fretbord so it was ready for the frets to be polished.
Moving back to the body it was time to prep for the new pickup to go in. Starting with the new jack socket. The key is to prep and tin anything before you jump in! Take 10 seconds to prep it, makes the job much easier. Once the jack socket has be done, prep the pot and connect the pickup to the pot and the jack socket to the pot.
Once done, re-attached the saddles and chuck one string on to give it a test and make sure everything is working as it should with no ground hum! This one was fine, so that string came back off and it on to fret work!
Start by taping off the fret board. The go from fret 1 does to the last fret with 1500 – 12000 grit paper. I then took out the dremel to really polish them up. One last buff and the frets are glassy and clean.
Re-string it, set the action, check the intonation and we’re good to go!
